Dreams 1-2

March 14, 2012
There is a young man, and he is asleep. He is simply a shell. He cannot feel, his ears cannot hear, and his eyes are unopened, so he cannot see. For what has felt like a lifetime, he has simply existed in a void, lifeless and in darkness. His existence is empty and meaningless. Suddenly, within the void, without warning, something changed. A feeling came over him. A gentle breeze brushed across his face. He could feel the soothing touch of the wind as it swept over him. It was a simple phenomenon, yet it was the first time the young man had felt it, or at the very least noticed it. Shortly after the breeze, his ears were opened. He could hear the soft rustling of the wind, and what sounded like a stream of water nearby. To him, it sounded so peaceful. Before this, he had never heard even the slightest of sounds, so even something as simple as a rushing stream was like music. Shortly after his ears were opened, he heard a voice.
Wake up..open your eyes...
The voice repeated that phrase a few times. It was a soft, gentle voice, yet the young man could feel the power in each word. After hearing the voice, the young man suddenly felt his eyes loosen from their seal. Not only could he now open his eyes, but he also felt like he absolutely had to. He knew that he had to see for himself the world around him, because it felt so different and inviting. Slowly, his eyes eased opened. That very moment, his vision was overtaken by a blinding light. The light only lasted for a moment, and when his eyes adjusted he realized that he was looking at the sky. The sun shone brightly and the tops of trees swayed with the breeze. The young man was lying on his back in a clearing of a beautiful forest, surrounded by colors of every hue. He ran his hands through the grass. This young man had the body of a youth, but the spirit of an infant. He was new to this world, to the feeling of grass, the scent of the air, and the sound of a rushing stream. The young man sat up to look at what was around him. It was in that moment that it was revealed to him just how vast the forest was. This forest, much like the young man’s soul, was innocent, untouched, without blemish. The young man saw it as perfect, a masterpiece. He stood and began to walk in the grass, moving several blades between his toes as he took steps. At first, his steps were small, as if simply walking made him nervous. As he progressed however, he began taking great steps, eventually leading him to the water, where he dove in to swim. Shortly after, he went to lie in the grass again. He shut his eyes, embracing the world. The young man took delight in this place. Never before had he been at such peace. In fact, never before had he felt such joy. Before, his life was empty, nothing but a great void. He had been given new life, reborn. Now, he was truly awake…

The young man’s eyes opened only a few moments after he had shut them. His attention was brought to a loud cry from above. He gazed up at the sky and saw the source of the cry. It was an eagle flying above the forest in circles, almost as if it were in search of something. It was a majestic creature, and its cry asserted power. The young man sat up. He felt more at attention with his surroundings now compared to when he first opened his eyes. He now observed more of the detail rather than simply taking in the sights at face value. What caught his attention the most was a single flower secluded on the grass. He stood and walked over to the flower. He knelt down to observe. This flower seemed special somehow. It was yellow, and shaped like a rose. The young man reached out to touch it. Before he reached it though, a feeling came over him. Something was wrong. The flower was starting to wilt. A chill came over the young man as one of the petals fell from the flower. It was a new sensation he had not yet seen. Death. He quickly jerked his arm back, now reluctant to touch the flower. The sky suddenly grew dark, and the young man felt cold. Everything around him seemed to wither away before his very eyes. Leaves were falling from trees. The grass was losing its color. It was here that the young man felt another sensation he had never felt. Fear. He looked around in hopes of finding a refuge from this darkness. However, he found no such shelter in time. After only a few moments, darkness touched him and he fell to the ground, and he began to lose consciousness. The last thing he heard was the eagles cry, then his world faded to black.
